featuring Ayhan Sicimoglu & Latin All
Stars

The cook's name is Ayhan Sicimoglu. Just one listen, and you know something
is up with his music.
Ayhan Sicimoglu 's love of Latin percussion led him to one of its capitals -- New York City.
Sicimoglu
spent seven years there, playing on the Latin club circuit. He developed
friends and connections in
the world of mambo and salsa. Then five years ago, Sicimoglu returned to Istanbul. It was as
if he
had appointed himself latin percussion's ambassador to that crucial bridge between the
occident and
the orient. Sicimoglu didn't have much competition for that job. He now leads
Afro-cuban percussion
workshops in Istanbul. He hosts Latin Lover, a regular music show on the FM dial there. And
Sicimoglu
avows his enthusiasm for Cuban music on his new CD "Friends and Family."
Sicimoglu shows on
"Friends and Family" that he is an eminently capable latin
percussionist
.
As far as morphing elements of
his two turfs -- Turkey and Latin America -- it's the tune Reggaeturkaton that is
Sicimoglu's most convincing
effort. As the title might indicate, this is reggaeton right up the Bosphorus. Sicimoglu
enlisted Colombian rapper
Rodrigo Rodriguez. His rhymes in Spanglish and the reedy Turkish instrumentation are
emblematic of this recording
by Ayhan Sicimoglu. Two places and two influences, an ocean and a half apart, but one man
cleverly
crafting
one sound.
It's not just an academic experiment either. Since it was released in
September, Sicimoglu's
"Friends and Family" has been a hot seller in Turkey.
